John William Bailly’s In Situ drawings were created during voyages aboard the Diamond Princess of Princess Cruise Lines. Executed directly on location, each drawing constitutes an immediate encounter between artist and place.

Working exclusively from observation, without photographic reference, Bailly records the architecture, landscape, atmosphere, and distinctive visual character of each site through the direct language of drawing. The works are neither reconstructed nor reworked after the experience; the marks remain as they were made in situ, preserving the immediacy of the artist’s encounter with a particular place and moment.

For Bailly, drawing becomes a form of visual and cultural observation—an act of looking that transforms travel into a sustained engagement with place. Each work functions simultaneously as an image, a document of presence, and a record of perception, locating the artist within the landscape rather than simply depicting it.

IN SITU PROJECT
In Situ is a project by British-French-American artist John William Bailly to create a subjective atlas of the world through en plein air drawings. Bailly draws places as he explores cities and landscapes. Bailly has self-imposed a set of guidelines for the works. The drawings are intentionally limited to the most rudimentary medium-stone on wood, that is graphite/lead on Arches watercolor paper. They are all 7 x 10 inches / 18 x 26 centimeters. The works must be started and finished on location-in one sitting. The works do not rely on photography or other sources but rather only human perception in that time and place.
