Director Jorge Graupera follows John William Bailly through his studio practice at the Deering Estate as the inaugural Charles Deering McCormick Fellow Artist in Residence. Additional footage records Bailly in his home town in Lyon, France, as well as museums in Paris to capture the artist’s singular creative process. This short film documents Bailly’s engaged practice at the Deering Estate spanning over 3 years. The film highlights the artist’s exploration of how we are who we are in relation to history, place, and culture. Running time: 20 minutes approx. The film will take place on Sunday, April 16, 2023, from 6pm – 9pm, in the Deering Estate Courtyard. Film is for age: 12+

Parking & Directions:  Free parking is available in the Visitor Center parking lot located on SW 168 Street just west of 72nd Avenue, and along SW 72nd avenue near SW 167 street. Ticket check-in is located at the Main Gate located near SW 167 Street.

JOHN WILLIAM BAILLY
John William Bailly is a French–American artist born in 1968 in Slough, UK. He is an Artist-in-Residence Fellow at the Deering Estate in Miami. He received his MFA in painting and printmaking from Yale University, and has been a Faculty Fellow of the Honors College at Florida International University since 2004. His work explores history and culture, with an emphasis on the Transatlantic dialogue. His paintings explore the question of how we are who we are in relation to history, place, and culture. John William Bailly is represented by LnS Gallery in Miami and his work is available at Clamp Art in New York City.

THE CENTRAL ROLE OF WOMEN IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF MIAMI

L’influence des femmes sur la construction et l’aménagement des villes ?! 🤔

Les passionnés d’histoire et de développement des villes seront intrigués d’apprendre que le destin de la ville de Miami a été inextricablement lié à plusieurs femmes, de Julia Tuttle, considérée comme la première fondatrice d’une grande ville américaine, aux 3 femmes qui ont permis de préserver le désormais Parc National des Everglades, en passant par l’influence de Mary Brickell sur le quartier d’affaires du centre ville, qui porte aujourd’hui son nom et celui de son mari.

Venez découvrir comment les femmes ont influencé et façonné le destin de cette grande ville des États-Unis, à travers le regard de John Bailly professeur à l’Université internationale de Floride (FIU), artiste franco-américain, originaire de Lyon.

Artiste-peintre franco-américain originaire de Lyon et issu d’une famille multi-culturelle, John Bailly est Professeur à l’Université Internationale de Floride (FIU) et s’intéresse à travers ses oeuvres, aux racines et aux liens qui unissent profondément la France et les États-Unis. Il emmène chaque année un groupe d’étudiants du “Honors College” – un cursus qui récompense les meilleurs élèves de l’université de Floride- à Lyon pour un voyage d’études sur les arts, l’histoire et les droits civiques, au cours duquel les étudiants se rendent au Centre d’Histoire de la Résistance et de la Déportation de Lyon, au mémorial de la prison de Montluc, ou encore à la Maison d’Izieu et au Plateau des Glières.

L’Équipe des Lyonnes est aujourd’hui un réseau d’un nouveau genre, une aventure collective de +1800 membres, qui se réunit régulièrement sous différents formats (rencontres, cafés Live, conférences, participation collective à des évènements partenaires…) avec l’ambition d’encourager les femmes à prendre positivement leur place dans le débat public, sans victimisation et sans opposer les femmes aux hommes.
