You are invited to join us for a screening of “In Situ,” followed by a discussion with Jorge Graupera, John William Bailly, and Deering Estate  Head Curator & Museum Manager Melissa Diaz.

Director Jorge Graupera follows John William Bailly through his studio practice at the Deering Estate as the inaugural Charles Deering McCormick Fellow Artist in Residence. Additional footage records Bailly in his home town in Lyon, France, as well as museums in Paris to capture the artist’s singular creative process. This short film documents Bailly’s engaged practice at the Deering Estate spanning over 3 years. The film highlights the artist’s exploration of how we are who we are in relation to history, place, and culture.

ABOUT JOHN WILLIAM BAILLY
John William Bailly is a French–American artist born in 1968 in Slough, UK. He is an Artist-in-Residence Fellow at the Deering Estate in Miami. He received his MFA in painting and printmaking from Yale University, and has been a Faculty Fellow of the Honors College at Florida International University since 2004. His work explores history and culture, with an emphasis on the Transatlantic dialogue. His paintings explore the question of how we are who we are in relation to history, place, and culture. John William Bailly’S work is available at Clamp Art in New York City.

L’Alliance Française de Lyon a le plaisir de vous inviter à la projection du court métrage de Jorge Gonzalez Graupera, réalisateur originaire de Miami. Le film a été produit par Melissa Diaz du Deering Estate à Miami.

Le documentaire met en scène l’artiste Franco-américain John Bailly, sa perspective sur l’art, sur les questions liées à l’identité linguistique, à la préservation du territoire (la mangrove) et à la sauvegarde du patrimoine culturel et ancestral. 

Cette belle photographie de la diversité francophone se déroule entre Miami, Lyon et Paris. C’est le fruit de 3 années de résidence artistique de John Bailly au Deering Estate à Miami lors desquelles il a exploré les questions liées à l’identité Franco-Américaine, au territoire, à l’environnement et à l’Histoire.

Current Deering Estate Artists in Residence, Dr. Keshia Abraham and Michelle Grant-Murray, present a performative workshop, Of Mastery, Manifesto and Movement, as part of the closing celebration of John William Bailly’s In-Situ at the Great Hall of the Stone House. Of Mastery, Manifesto and Movement is an exploration of myth making and the magic of movement through textual embodiment. In this two-hour experience, participants will unearth the senses to create vibrant works of art.

Participants are invited to traverse the exhibit space with the virtuosity of words transcribed into layers of embodied movement and text by Toni Morrison, Ntozake Shange, and Toni Cade Bambara. The layered textures of language, corporeal body, and artistic expression of John William Bailly’s In-Situ celebrate a generative practice of authenticity. Of Mastery, Manifesto and Movement is an integrative process that channels memory, innovation, and gratitude.

All participants are invited to meditate, move, listen, feel, reflect, write – create while using the exhibit space and each other to build a language, community, some beautiful power, and some play together. The structure of the program includes introductions and recognitions, exploratory exercises, discovering movement improvisational tools, working on manifestos, as well as reflections and gratitude exercises.

DR. KESHIA ABRAHAM

Dr. Keshia Abraham is a writer, scholar, performer, dramaturg and in international JEDI (Just Equity with Dignity and Intention) educator committed to facilitating personal and organizational development through intercultural learning. Her most recent performance work includes serving as dramaturg and performer in Teo Castellanos’ “F.Punk Junkies.” Keshia firmly believes in the transformative power of international education and the long-term impact it has, hence her unwavering commitment to comprehensive internationalization especially at HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities). An elected Council member at the Forum on Education Abroad, Dr. Abraham has collaborated on working groups, presented at forums, seminars, and conferences on both international education and African (diaspora) literature all over the world. She is a Fulbright scholar and Mellon fellow in addition to other academic accolades. Dr. Abraham earned a PhD in Comparative Literature with an emphasis on Postcolonial literature and culture (specifically African Diaspora Women’s Literature) and Popular Education at Binghamton University and her Bachelor’s degree in English (emphasis on Women’s Studies) at the esteemed Spelman College. She is also a certified Ayurvedic yoga specialist and experienced wellness practitioner which informs her J.E.D.I work. Keshia is the recipient of the Forum on Education Abroad’s 2022 Wolitzer Award for her remarkable service within International Education. She is currently a literary Artist-in-Residence at the Deering Estate

MICHELLE GRANT-MURRAY

Michelle Grant-Murray is the Artistic Director of Olujimi Dance Collective and has taught, performed, and created work in Europe, Asia, South America, the United States and the Caribbean. Most recently, Michelle has served as performer and co-choreographer of Teo Castellano’s “F-Punk Junkies.” She has presented at the 2021 Afrikin Art Basel event, Resistance, Resilience, and Creation; The Little Haiti Cultural Complex, Noir Atlantic: Connecting Continents; 45 Degrees Summer Intensive, the Smithsonian Institute, Urban Bush Women Summer Leadership Institute, the Perez Art Museum, the Norton Museum, and the Moving Body Moving Image Film Festival, Caribbean Studies Association, New Waves Festival, Edna Manley Performing Arts College, EnArts Performing Arts College, Oya Institute, the Caribbean Studies Association and the Biennial International Dance Conference. She conducts community engagement workshops, master classes and residencies at several universities, and dance institutions throughout the United States and abroad. Michelle is an Associate Professor Sr. and Coordinator of Dance at Miami Dade College where she is the Artistic Director of Jubilation Dance Ensemble. Michelle is the founder and host of “The Black Artist Talk,” a conversation that dialogs the creative process, politics, and preservation of Black Artists in South Florida. Michelle is the Founder and Executive Director of the annual Artistry In Rhythm (A.I.R.) Dance Conference presented and sponsored by Miami Dade College. As a dance scholar, she is the author of Beyond the Surface: An Inclusive American Dance History. Michelle is committed to the developmental voice of the Black Female Artists. She is currently an Artist-in-Residence with the South Miami Dade Cultural Arts Center and the Deering Estate.

The Deering Estate is a 21st Century house museum, cultural and ecological field station, and a national landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places, owned by the State of Florida, and managed by Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department. 2022 marks the 100th anniversary of the construction of the Stone House, and along with our philanthropic partners, the Deering Estate Foundation & 100 Ladies of Deering, we will be hosting a series of events & programs in celebration of this momentous occasion.

SOUTH FLORIDA ART SALONS are a unique gathering place for artists and art lovers throughout South Florida. SOUTH FLORIDA ART SALONS were founded and are hosted by Elle Schorr, artist and curator, and have been meeting since 2012. Since October, 2019, they’ve been presented on Zoom. Since October, 2020, the lively discussions which follow each artist’s presentation have been moderated by Dainy Tapia, curator of Art.seen.365, a platform for the promotion of the visual arts and artists in Miami, South Florida and beyond.

Art Salons offer thoughtful presentations by highly respected artists whose artwork is being shown in museums and galleries in South Florida, nationally and internationally. Their work covers the gamut of contemporary conceptual art practices, including cultural, socio/political, environmental, scientific, race and gender focused and aesthetic practices. These presentations include the materials, techniques and technologies used to convey their ideas. The discussions between presenting artist and audience offer the opportunity to learn more about the presenter, explore the practical side of being an artist, enhance professional development, share useful resources, and network with other artists.

John William Bailly has spent the last four years embedded in the Deering Estate as the inaugural McCormick Art Fellow. During his tenure, Bailly has transformed his Power House studio into a salon that welcomes artists, students, guests and creatives alike to enter into his hub of creative energy. The culminating exhibition of his residency In Situ, brings the vitality of Bailly’s studio practice into the Deering Estate’s Great Hall gallery. John William Bailly: In Situ includes a series of paintings and drawings created by Bailly at the Deering Estate, with references to the Burial Mound and The Cutler Fossil Site. On display daily, September 9- November 13, 2022. The exhibition evening and artist reception will be held on Friday, September 9th from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Deering Estate, and is free with RSVP.

A short biographical documentary by Jorge Gonzalez Graupera commissioned by the Deering Estate will accompany the exhibition. This film highlights the process-based facet of Bailly’s practice at the Deering Estate, that include early morning hikes to draw in the nature preserve, as well as canoeing out to the barrier islands surrounding the Estate on Biscayne Bay. The Deering Estate maintains the legacy of Charles Deering of supporting artists and creative innovation through its vigorous residency and exhibition program. The Deering Estate’s Exhibition Program has always been a platform for artists to explore the site and illustrate different facets of the history of the site and its surroundings.

John William Bailly is a French–American artist born in 1968 in Slough, UK. He is an Artist-in-Residence Fellow at the Deering Estate in Miami. He received his MFA in painting and printmaking from Yale University, and has been a Faculty Fellow of the Honors College at Florida International University since 2004. His work explores history and culture, with an emphasis on the Transatlantic dialogue. His paintings explore the question of how we are who we are in relation to history, place, and culture. His works have been exhibited at University of Maine Museum of Art, Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Art, John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, Texas State University, as well as other venues in the US and France. He was awarded the South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship for Visual and Media Artists and a State of Florida Individual Artist Grant. In 2007, Bailly and critically acclaimed poet Richard Blanco produced a collaborative project, Place of Mind. At FIU, Bailly is the Faculty Director of Honors France, Italy, and Spain study abroad, annually leading students throughout Western Europe for three months. He has been awarded two Excellence in Teaching awards and a European Union grant for course development. His work was recently acquired by the Perez Art Museum of Miami, the University of Miami’s Lowe Art Museum and the Zillman Art Museum in Maine. John William Bailly is represented by LnS Gallery in Miami and his work is available at Clamp Art in New York City.
