David de Lyon is part of “Flower Wars Lyon,” a series of twenty paintings made during the COVID-19 pandemic. The “Flower Wars Lyon” series was painted in plein air in the Brindas countryside in 2020-2021 and is part of Bailly’s larger “Flower Wars” series.
“Flower Wars Lyon” depicts mythological figures appearing in Europe, and is a complement to Bailly’s “Flower Wars Miami” series that was painted at the Deering Estate in Miami and presents European figures in the American landscape. In these two series Bailly demonstrates the reciprocity of the Transatlantic exchange, with natural and cultural elements, both creative and destructive, traveling simultaneously east and west.
On a larger scale, “Flower Wars” reflects on creative and destructive relationships between people, cultures, and nature in the time of COVID-19 and the US 2020 Presidential Election and Insurrection.
