The history of the Spanish American transatlantic dialogue is both ruinous and enriching. With an emphasis on Miami, this course examines the social and cultural manifestations of this relationship. What impact has Spanish religion, art, and popular tradition had on the Americas from 1492 to the present (ida)? Conversely, what has returned to Spain from Latin America (vuelta)? How specifically has this melange manifested itself in Miami, positioned as the contemporary center of European and Latin American relations?

The group stays in Madrid for ten days visiting the museums and monuments of the Spanish capital. Madrid is the third most populous city in Western Europe, yet it is easy to only come away from it with a simplistic tourist perspective. Visiting diverse places, from the austere Palacio Real to El Rastro flea market, provides students with an in-depth understanding of the city.

Barcelona is the capital of Catalunya, and home to the famous Modernisme artistic movement. Students will quickly realize that no other city in the world is culturally similar to Barcelona. The FIU group stays for 7 days, discovering the distinct identity of this seaside city.

The incredible cultural melting pot of Sevilla will remind Miamians of home. Iberian, Roman, Moorish, Jewish and Christian cultural traditions manifest themselves in the character of this city. A direct commonality between Sevilla and Miami is that this Andalusian city once served as the gateway between Spain and the Americas.

One of the thrills of living in España for three weeks is discovering the diversity of food: tapas, tortilla, paella, gazpacho, jamon Serrano. Although meals are not included in the program costs, Professor Bailly is a lover of street food and he will share with you his favorite places.

What is a country but its land? The FIU España program presents multiple natural adventures, including hiking and swimming. Be ready—we walk an average of ten miles a day.

This program is founded on the principle that to know a culture, one must live that culture—immerse oneself completely. “Miami España: Ida y Vuelta” will offer you the opportunity to be a Spaniard for three weeks. You will find yourself where no other tourists are, enjoying the real, beautiful España.
