On 11 March 2020, FIU announced the transition of all classes to an online format.” Today, Florida’s State University System is transitioning to remote learning in response to the coronavirus pandemic. In an abundance of caution, and following the lead of Governor Ron DeSantis, at FIU we are responding by beginning remote learning this Thursday. Remote instruction for all classes will occur through at least Saturday, April 4.”
This poses a particular challenge for my classes, as they are centered around off-campus excursions. In collaboration with my Teaching Assistants- Sofia Guerra, Marco Linares, Natalie Mateo, Maria Carla Robaina, and Nicolette Roe-we have devised the following.
Class communication will be maintained through existing WhatsApp groups.
Scheduled Walking Lectures will be offered to students in the format of webpages. These pages will enable students to virtually experience the locations, and complete the walks when normal operations resume. One new lecture will be open every class meeting.
Quizzes will be online. Students will take them at their convenience. The only thing preventing students from cheating is their integrity and sense of pride. Each quiz will be opened a week after the lecture was opened.
Miami as Texts projects will be based on personal student experience and/or the information presented on the Walking Lecture webpages. All Miami as Texts projects will be due on Sunday 26 April at 23:59. This late due date is set to enable students to have time to visit the locations after classes hopefully resume.
Semester projects for Miami in Miami and Art Society Conflict will remain the same. France, Italy, and Spain will complete Ineffable Miami. Examples of Ineffable Miami can be seen on this webpage. All projects are due Sunday 19 April at 23:59.
As traditional extra-credit opportunities are not possible, each student will be awarded 5 Dealing With This Coronavirus Bullshit extra-credit points.
This is a fluid situation. Please regularly monitor our WhatsApp groups.
