Professor Bailly’s FIU Honors College students will earn 2 extra-credit points for attending this event. Details will be sent in an email.
Join scholars and contemporary art enthusiasts to explore the role of contemporary art in historic places. During the evening, Elizabeth Merritt from the America Alliance of Museum’s Future of Museums will provide a quick synopsis of the 2 day symposium’s findings and New York-based artist, Ofri Cnaani, will lead 2 separate interactive pieces for guests to be part of the action!
6:45-7:45 p.m. Ofri Cnanni – Recalculating Route
A one-hour participatory experience taking the shape of geographically-based group messaging app that encourages self-guided wandering through call and response prompts and allows participants to re-experience familiar or unfamiliar sites and explored spaces assumed to be known.
The WhatsApp project is directive based and features artist-issued short prompts like “look up,” to which the participant responds by taking a photo of what they see and replying with that photo to the WhatsApp group. As a result, a WhatsApp-dedicated group compiles and tracks simultaneous individual perspectives of Vizcaya.
8:00 – 9:00 p.m. Ofri Cnanni – Drawing of Drawing Sessions
Drawing of Drawing Sessions is a hands-on performance rooted in sketching that begins with one person sitting in front of a selected object or view and drawing it. A short distance behind, a second person will draw the first person drawing the object or view; they are followed by a third and a fourth, forming a line of sketchers.
The one-hour long performance includes several drawing assignments. After each assignment, the first in line will move to the end, turning the performance itself into a drawn human line that is constantly moving through its surroundings and shifting its focal point. Through this performance, both the drawers and the viewers are encouraged to explore Vizcaya through changing perspectives.
